Overview

This project started with a fateful text from my boss one evening simply saying "Hey dude, I need you to head to Singapore in May to lead a shoot." Turns out, Amazon was expanding its Flex driver program into Singapore, its first move into Southeast Asia and a critical test market for the broader region. The program needed localized photography that reflected Singaporean culture: its people, neighborhoods, and the ethnic diversity of Chinese, Malay, and Indian residents who would become the face of the program. The budget was $25,000, roughly 10% of what our standard agency would have charged for a shoot of this scope.

Goal

Produce a full library of lifestyle photography for Amazon Flex Singapore's driver recruitment campaign, spanning social, web, and out-of-home placements. The images needed to authentically represent the three primary ethnic communities in Singapore, feel genuinely local rather than corporate, and be shot across multiple real environments distinct to the city-state. Everything had to be delivered in under two months.

My Role

I started remotely, working with an in-market business partner to build the shot list and brief a local production company on casting and location scouting. The casting requirements alone made this one of the more complex productions I've managed. I needed to represent Singapore's three primary ethnic communities — Chinese, Malay, and Indian — with male and female talent across each group. Within that, roles had to be distributed across driver types (including a student and a retiree, reflecting the actual Flex driver demographic), customers, and the location contexts each group would appear in. Vehicle representation mattered too: at least one sedan and one van had to be featured to reflect the two driver categories Amazon was actively recruiting for.

PRE-PRODUCTION

All of it had to play out across four distinct environments: an HDB flat, a condo, a landed house, and a delivery station, each one visually distinct and immediately recognizable to a Singaporean audience. Getting the full picture right before we ever set foot on set was as much a logistics problem as a creative one.

Once I arrived, I spent a week embedded in the Amazon Singapore office alongside the production crew, mapping out every shot across every day to make sure nothing was left to chance at that budget level. From there I traveled to each location ahead of the shoot, confirmed logistics, met the final casting selects in person, dialed in wardrobe, and made last-minute adjustments where needed.

When it came time to shoot, I spent three days on set with the DP and crew capturing several thousand images across all four environments. Back home I worked through post-production to land on 30 final selects the Singapore marketing team could immediately put to use.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Outcome

The 30 selects went live across Amazon Flex Singapore's driver recruitment ecosystem — social ads, the flex.amazon.com.sg website, and out-of-home placements — making this the first fully localized lifestyle photography campaign Amazon had produced anywhere in Southeast Asia. The campaign supported a program that would go on to generate over 223 million impressions and more than 4 million clicks to the recruitment landing page in the years that followed, eventually filling the sedan driver pool entirely (source.)

All of this was delivered on time, in under two months, at a budget 90% below the initial agency estimate.
